The Internet can be a powerful place to stir up support. In the United States, the presidential candidates are turning to the Internet more than their predecessors did. The Internet has also been the place where awareness about causes has been raised. It is where fans have signed petitions to try to save television shows on the verge of being axed.
However, it is not always “good causes” that people are promoting online. For example, Australian police recently investigated a 16-year-old who had created a MySpace page allegedly to intimidate and threaten a 17-year-old. Police say the youth was encouraging others to bash and even reportedly fatally harm the victim. The 16-year-old was released, but the police say the matter is still under investigation.
